Hello From Sunny Seattle

4 Jun

Seattle has brought out its sunny best, and the weather here has been gorgeous. James even got lightly sunburned Saturday afternoon! It has been 15/16 degrees the past few days, which kind of tricked us because it feels warmer than the same temperature in Melbourne. Maybe we had more bay/Antarctic winds in Melbourne or something.

Our corporate housing is in Belltown. This is the bedroom we’re sleeping in. You can see Elliott Bay to the left.

This is the other bedroom. We thought the cats would like that bay window more than they did, but they seem to prefer the scratching post so this room is basically going unused.

The living room. It’s much messier now.

There’s another big window to the right of that. And through the window what view do we have?

Oh hai there Space Needle! This is the actual view through the living room window and you can see it in the main bedroom too. A lot of Seattle homes have either Space Needle, city, mountain or water views. Here is a blurry shot of the view at night through one of the bedrooms. You can see all the pretty lights and that black bit in the middle is the water.

As nice as the views are, we’re keen to be in our own place as soon as possible. We have corporate housing until the end of June but hopefully we’ll be out of here in the next couple of weeks. We’ve been looking at some apartments but unfortunately we can only see ourselves living in the super high end ones. We’ll still be able to save money, but not quite as much as we had originally hoped for.

At this moment it’s a decision between a 1/study or 2 bedroom place in the nice building. The 2 bedroom place is indescribably nicer, and at 1300 sqf so roomy and gorgeous. But the 1 bedroom is also nice, and 1k a month cheaper. Also I’m annoyed that everyone seems to charge pet rent. It’s $50 a month for our 2 cats, and it’s like WTF? We’re already paying a partially non-refundable damage deposit, WTF is cat rent for? It’s not even like it’s a dog that could possibly pee/poop in the common areas or outside the building and need someone to clean up after it. A cat sleeps 16 hours a day! Even though it’s a tiny fraction of the total, I hate that we’re getting gouged on everything. And rent prices increase 5-10% a year! Show me an investment in the world that is making a guaranteed 5-10%!

But yeah, we’ve been eating out a little, shopping at different supermarkets (Whole Foods and QFC so far) and exploring different apartments and neighbourhoods. We only have one left to see, which is Terravita in Capitol Hill. Tomorrow is a day of rest for me (and James’ first day at Amazon!). I should probably do some laundry but the washing machine here is terrifyingly scungy. I miss my beautiful Miele washer/dryer and dishwasher. Oh and ugh, some of the fridges here are black (with a matching oven and dishwasher). But mainly ugh to the black fridges, which look really cheap.

There are a whole bunch of differences between Seattle and Melbourne (America and Australia) that nobody warned us about, but that’s for a future post!

Yay! Great to hear from you. It’ll be so much fun for me to ‘move’ to another country vicariously by reading your blog…

Hey Joan! It’s great to hear from you too. I’ll try to keep the blog up to date with what we’re up to – expect a blog post about the place we end up picking! =)

They actually adapted really well! I think they had a hard time on their journey over – the pet relocation people told us that it’s harder on the owners than the cats, but the cats looked pretty terrified in the photo the relocation people sent us!

But I think the horrible flight over actually made them more willing to adapt once they arrived. Even though they were in an unfamiliar environment, they had us and all the new toys we’d bought to bribe them with, and it probably seemed pretty awesome compared to being in a cage on a plane.

They didn’t love the move from corporate housing to permanent housing, but once they actually arrived they were back to normal within half an hour and they’ve been fine ever since. =)

hello. we’re moving there in a month through Amazon as well- was your relocation through Graebel Companies Inc.? I would LOVE to stay in corporate housing like this! We have kids and I am very nervous- don’t really wanna go- but a bit anxious as well. I just don’t want some crap housing- though we can get a hotel through them if we don’t like it.

Hello! Yup Graebel did our relocation – they were super professional and very easy to work with. A lot of the Aussies were put in this building (and many of our friends decided to stay on). As far as I can tell you normally get put somewhere decent. =)

I’m coming to Seattle in a week or two, so which apartment you finally chose ?? Which apartment is this at Belltown ?? I’m working with Graebel on the move so some insight from you will be helpful, Thanks

This apartment was Centennial Towers in Belltown which is where a lot of Amazon people get put up for their first month. A lot of our friends live in Belltown but we didn’t really like the area and eventually went with Rollin St in SLU.

Hi we might be moving down Seattle in the next few months when all the paperwork are done, and would like to find out where all your furniture would get sent to when you reach? Do the corporate housing come fully furnished? Thanks!

Our air shipment was delivered to our corporate housing and our sea shipment was delivered to our apartment (it arrived 1-2 weeks after we’d moved in). Amazon should have someone to coordinate the shipment with you and it’s all pretty easy.

Our corporate housing was fully furnished and had some basic kitchen utensils. It was pretty utilitarian but got us by until our stuff arrived!

I have a furnished condo with panoramic view of water and Seattle, very close to Amazon campus. I would like to rent to Amazon as temporary housing. Do you have suggestion on where do I contact them?

    • pamperedhousewife June 10, 2014 at 2:00 pm #

Hi there. I don’t think Amazon rents from private landlords – they contract out to Aboda. Sorry and best of luck renting out your place.

Hello, I just came across your blog. It is fantastic and has helped me a lot. My husband and I just moved here a month ago from the east coast for Amazon. It has been hard adjusting to life here and missing our friends and families back home. I’m not used to the large population of homeless people in Seattle. We are in corporate housing in SLU. Hopefully I won’t feel as home sick after we find an apartment to settle in.

      Hey there!

I found that getting our own place and our own furniture really helped with feeling settled in. And the first month is tricky since you don’t have a regular grocery store, gym, hairdresser, etc. But it definitely gets easier and it didn’t take me very long to fall in love with the area. =)
