Red Oxx Air Boss Bag

19 May

This was actually a James purchase but I was the one who did the research so I take credit. Not that it really took that much research, since my first few hits indicated that the Red Oxx Air Boss is widely considered one of the best carry-on bags for business travellers.

James travels to Sydney every week, leaving early Monday morning and arriving back home late Wednesday evening. He currently uses a big duffle bag, but he’s sick of checking his luggage because it takes too much time. Plus when he was coming back from Sydney with food poisoning it was a hassle arranging to get his bag off his original flight (he was bumped because they thought he was too sick to fly).

He used to travel with one of his colleagues who checked her bag, so he figured he might as well check his too. But normally when we travel together we are carry-on luggage only kind of people. We are also definitely not wheelie bag kind of people, so i was glad to see that the Air Boss is wheel-free. James’ aversion is primarily because they’re made for people slightly shorter than him so he has to crouch to drag it along. But I have an irrational hatred of wheelie bags because I associate them with people who pack too much, steal your luggage space on the plane, and need help lifting the bag into the overhead compartment.

The Air Boss comes in 12 colours and James chose Coal, which is a light to medium grey.

It was actually not his first colour choice, but I managed to convince him that since the bag is for business travel, bright purple was probably not the best idea.

James: I’m not ashamed. I like the colour.

Whatever, grey is better.

James used it for his latest Sydney trip. I asked him what he thought of it and he said “good”. Thankfully I was able to tease out a bit more opinion:

  • All the weight is on one shoulder because everything is packed in the single bag (instead of distributed between a giant duffel bag and his laptop case). This isn’t a huge deal because James isn’t a weakling.
  • A single bag makes it much easier going through crowds.
  • He wishes there were a small pocket to accommodate the little things that tend to get shuffled around, like USB drives and keys. His old bag had lots of little pockets. (Update: I originally bought him this to fix the problem but now he uses the Grid-It organiser, which is heaps better)
  • The bag is slightly too large to fit completely under the plane seat (which is weird because I remember some reviews saying that it did fit under their seats. Maybe US seats are bigger?)
  • It keeps his shirts straighter because they’re against something flat instead of getting moved around in the duffel bag.
  • There isn’t any cushioning on the bottom, so he has to layer some clothes under the middle so his laptop doesn’t hit the ground when he puts it down. He’s thinking of getting a sleeve for the laptop.

The Air Boss is a hefty $225 USD plus $45 shipping, but I think it’s worth it on a cost-per-use basis (at least the AUD is high at the moment). And since it comes with a lifetime warranty he will never have to replace it.
